Decoding the “Code”
The Catholic Communication Campaign announced resources that will provide accurate information about the life of Jesus and the origins of Christianity prior to the release of the movie based on the novel “The Da Vinci Code.” The resources include: www.jesusdecoded.com, a documentary which will air on NBC in May, and a booklet entitled “The Authentic Jesus”, that will be available later this month. With all the advertising and news media coverage the release of the movie will no doubt be receiving, these resources will help to communicate the truth of our Faith and the facts of history.

Teaching Moment: A Word from Your Director
On Ash Wednesday, as we launched the Lenten season, Jesus reminded us of three basic skills that a Christian should adhere to. One needs to PRAY, then to help others through ALMSGIVING and finally we are urged to FAST. Each one of us try to do something more during Lent. We either try to give up something that we really, or others try to do something such as helping others or set time for prayer each day. As members of the Newman community, you are given a lot of opportunities to practice the three basic skills proposed by Jesus. We might have been distracted this past week because of the Spring Break. Now that we are back to our regular life, let us try to do something that helps me in my spiritual development and help others who are in need. As your Pastor, I would like to make a few suggestions that might help you to observe Lent better. First of all, try set time each day for prayer. At the Newman Center we have Mass at 12:05 P.M. If you are free at that hour try to make your best to attend the mass. If you are not able to do attend, then make time to read and reflect on the daily readings of the Mass. The scripture readings are listed in the Sunday Bulletin. On Wednesdays we have the Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament from 12:30 to 5:00 P.M. Sign up for 15 minute or half an hour. Bring your books with you and study and pray in front of the Blessed Sacrament. I really would like to see more people present during these 4 1/2 hours of prayer and adoration. On Fridays at 6:30 P.M. we gather to pray and reflect on the Passion and Death of Jesus through the Stations of the Cross. It takes only half an hour of your time. We have soup after the stations. During the Lenten season we have the Table of Plenty food drive. I encourage you to share your blessings with those who are less fortunate than we are. All the canned food will be given to St. Therese Center that helps people affected or infected by AIDS. The Center serves about 2500 people. The food we give them will help the Center's pantry and also their Easter baskets. Finally, try to help others. On Friday, March 10, 8 of us went to help in the Catholic Charities soup kitchen. We served dinner to over a hundred people. We are going again to serve dinner on Friday, March 24. We meet at the Newman Center at 3:15 P.M. and we will be back for the Stations of the Cross at 6:30 P.M. Try to find ways how you can help others in need. I am sure that every person has his or her own ideas of what to do during Lent. Let us join together to be witnesses to the Gospel on campus. Let us try to listen to what Jesus is calling to - to pray, to give and to fast.
