Lenten Busy Person Retreat – Monday, April 2 to Thursday, April 5.
Many members of the community cannot take time to go for a week or a weekend retreat but they have a desire to take time for their growth in their spiritual life. In order to accomplish this, I have designed a BUSY PERSON RETREAT during the beginning of Holy Week as a preparation for the celebration of the Triduum. You do not have to go to any place – just do it at home or during the lunch break at your leisure. What happens during the Busy Person Retreat? 1) Meet with Fr. Albert before the beginning of the retreat. 2) Spend half hour each day reflecting on the scripture readings of the day. These readings are published in the Sunday Bulletin. 3) If possible meet with Fr. Albert for 10 to 15 minutes each day to discuss your reflections. 4) Attend the 12:05 p.m. Mass at the Center or in another parish. 5) To conclude the retreat, please attend the 7:30 p.m. Mass on Holy Thursday. If you are interested, please sign up for the retreat. Sign up sheet is available in the lobby.

Teaching Moment
It seems as if everywhere you look—film, television, novels, magazines, advertisements—you see human bodies, naked or scantily clad, engaged in sexual behavior or striking provocative poses. What can we do about all this pornography?

First of all, let’s attempt to define the term. Pornography refers to “the use of visual or print media to present nudity or sexual activity in a degrading or depersonalizing way.” Not all nudity or sexual expression in media is pornographic. For example, obviously the nudes on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel are considered Michelangelo’s masterpieces, not pornography. So, too, a sexual scene in a film or a piece of fiction can be tastefully handled, fit within the context of the story, and enhance the viewer’s or reader’s appreciation of life, love, sensuality, and sexuality. On the other hand, entertainment that is aimed primarily at titillating the prurient interests of the viewer is all too common in our society today. It is doubtful whether playmates-of-the-month or other nudie pinups are being viewed as whole persons. Such portrayals of women as “cheese-cake” or men as “hunks” tend to dull our sensitivities to the real persons who are being airbrushed, glamorized, and depersonalized. Such depictions also serve to trivialize sexuality and sex itself.

Sexual harassment , sexual misconduct, and sexual abuse are on the rise in our society. While pornography is not the only cause of such psychologically destructive and immoral actions, it does seem to be a contributing factor. This is an issue that calls for a community-wide response. Writers, artists, actors, producers, directors, distributors, venders, critics, and the wider public need to accept responsibility for what we produce and what we consume in the media market. Sexuality is not and ought not to be a forbidden subject in the arts and media. By working together, we can create communities in which the arts can flourish, free speech can be upheld, and pornography will find no place.
